Santarem

Santarem is actually along the Rio Tapajos, not the Amazon.  The Rio Tapajos is a "clear" or "black" river and looks different than the Amazon.  The city has over 265,000 people with Indians, gold prospectors, rubber tappers, river dwellers, nut gatherers and herb collectors.  A very interesting combination of people and scenery.

We did a little fishing and you can see the piranhas.  Actually folks on the boat caught 3 and they were cooked and everyone shared.  It was delicious!!!  You can see where the 2 rivers flow side by side for a long time.  And of course look for the "gas station".  Its on the river!
